program information
- this residency is part of the u.s. national parks service arts in the parks program. the great smoky mountains national park provides 4-6 weeks of in-park housing in exchange for 2-3 sessions of public engagements. this year, the program connects with the arrowmont school of arts and crafts for arts resources, along with the oconaluftee job corps to provide arts enrichment sessions for at-risk youths.
- during this residency, i will teach a cyanotype printing workshop at the oconaluftee job corps, give a visiting artist lecture at the arrowmont school, demonstrate my equipment and cyanotype process to other park volunteers, and create reverse postcards for hikers at a select time and place along the trail. the rest of the time, i'll be exploring, hiking, and photographing in the area.
goals
- i plan to photograph in film, mostly medium format black and white, and some large format color, to increase my body of work for my main ongoing project, and the earth is skin and bones. i'll also work on some cyanotype experiments, drawing, and writing. thematically, i'll focus on the idea of the earth as one whole, continuous object, and explore the interactions between the many, smaller objects in its surface.
- additionally, since i'll be in south carolina in august for the solar eclipse, i may spend some of my july residency creating work in preparation for experiencing a rare celestial event; i'm not yet sure what this means in practice.
- i'm hoping to meet a lot of people from diverse backgrounds and have conversations about what it means to be a human in the world. i'd like to learn about the paths that bring us into a particular time and place together by encouraging mutual sharing of perspectives on beauty, agency, participation, seeing.
- i want to take full advantage of an interruption to my habitual summer, and bask in the mysteries of an unfamiliar location.
funding
- the program provides a stipend of up to $300 for materials. i'm also seeking individual sponsors to support my work this summer.
- if you'd like to kick in a few bucks to help me boost my resources for this project, please check out my rewards system on patreon at https://www.patreon.com/modgethanc, or contact me by email to arrange other options.
afterwards
- i don't yet have a plan for where any of this will go.
- if we've met during this residency in any capacity, i'd love to keep in touch. please feel free to drop me an email so there's a line of contact between us. or, if you'd rather just have an eye on what i'm up to in the future, my instagram is probably a good bet.
- i'm posting some rough scans here.
